2 Hour Paddle – offers an introduction to sea kayaking and to Bonne Bay. Winds are typically lighter in the morning and can be stronger in the afternoon.

3 Hour Nature Paddle & Aquarium Tour – an ocean learning experience with a marine specialist  that is slower paced and hands-on. 2½ hours on Bonne Bay followed by a tour of the Bonne Bay Marine Station Aquarium.

4.5 Hour Paddle & Shuttle – seize the opportunity to see more of Bonne Bay and the South Arm in possibly more challenging paddling conditions. Paddle one way, return via water taxi from Woody Point.

Paddle & Yoga – paddle to a scenic, outdoor location where you can unroll your mat for an all-levels flow class surrounded by panoramic views of Bonne Bay.

Paddle & Pint – take a leisurely group paddle around central Bonne Bay, ending the evening with music and a pint at the Cat Stop.

All tours depart from our waterfront office in Norris Point. In order to depart on time we ask that you arrive 30 minutes before your tour.

Bonne Bay is a sea kayaker’s paradise with its pristine waters, quaint coastal villages and spectacular views of the Tablelands, Gros Morne Mountain and the Long Range Mountains.

Minke whales are frequent visitors and throughout the whole paddling season we see bald eagles, common and Arctic terns, sea stars, sea urchins, lush kelp beds and colourful seaweeds.

Double kayaks are stable and less difficult to paddle; single kayaks are less stable and may require more upper body strength depending on conditions.

Youth must be at least 13 years of age to paddle in a single.

Safety and comfort is of utmost importance so please note that one’s experience and the weather conditions of the day are taken into consideration when single kayaks are requested. Single kayaks are less stable.

Tours are cancelled when we deem weather conditions unsafe for paddling (high winds, heavy rain, etc.)

We do paddle in rainy and cool conditions however we offer our guests the choice to cancel or reschedule their tour.

Dress for the air temperature when you paddle on Bonne Bay. We provide a PFD and a spray skirt to help keep you dry; however do expect to get a little wet! Water temperatures in mid-July through to September usually reach 17-19°C (63-66°F)… quite pleasant.

  • Sun hat with a wide brim
  • Fleece – if the air is cool a light fleece is best, your PFD provides warmth too
  • Hiking shorts are generally fine since your legs are below the deck of the kayak
  • Sneakers or sandals – we can get you launched without getting your feet wet
  • Rain jacket – especially if it’s misty, overcast or windy.
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun block
  • Water bottle…we do sell bottled water onsite if you need it
  • Binoculars
  • Dry bags – we can provide a dry bag, please remember it is not waterproof!
  • Treats – if you think that you’ll need a snack
  • *Yoga & Paddle – bring own mat if possible, we have a limited number to borrow; yoga clothes with extra layers for paddling

There are a number of factors affecting how comfortable you will feel in a sea kayak. The kayak cockpits are fairly spacious however if you are a larger person (long legs and/or large thighs) you may feel confined. Double sea kayaks are less confining and are much more stable than single kayaks. If you are quite tall, your feet may extend past the rudder controls. If you are prone to lower back pain or have poor flexibility, the sitting position may cause discomfort.

From a safety perspective, we like to keep the total weight maximum in double sea kayaks at 400lbs and the total weight maximum in single kayaks at 240lbs.

If you are unsure about sea kayaking, before registering for a tour we suggest you drop by our waterfront office to chat with our staff and try sitting in a kayak on the beach.

Five years old seems to be the age at which children have the attention span, awareness of safety and interest in their surroundings to enjoy a sea kayaking tour. We have PFDs and paddles for children. We recommend young children are paired with a strong paddler who can maneuver a double kayak in windy conditions. Select a tour time and day when winds are forecast to be calm. Generally, morning tours are calm (but not always)! Selecting a tour rather than renting is wise with young children as guides provide the added safety of knowing the area and providing assistance if necessary.
